Founder's Note

Forty-five years of steel, across four continents of training.

Bhupendra Jha is the founder and principal advisor of Jha & Associates. His career in Indian steel spans forty-five years — from the shop floors of the country's most advanced specialty steel plants, to training programmes with the world's foremost equipment makers, to greenfield commissioning, C-suite leadership, and independent board-level advisory.

He began his career at Bihar Alloys, where he spent sixteen formative years at what was then one of the most technologically advanced special steel plants in India. Under the plant's collaboration with Creusot-Loire of France, he was trained in India by visiting experts from Mannesmann-Demag — the pioneer of continuous casting, electric steelmaking, and long-product mill technology. During this period he installed Vacmetal UK vacuum degassing technology, trained on-site in India by Vacmetal engineers, and led the technical collaboration with Daido Steel—Nagoya, Japan, one of the world’s leading specialty steel producers and a technical collaborator with over 80 countries. It was at Bihar Alloys that he became the first engineer in India to commission closed continuous casting — a defining moment in the country's special steel history.

He then led Panchmahal Steel, at the time one of India's leading producers of stainless steel, before setting up Jalan Forging as a greenfield project over two years. He also set up Mittal Corp, Indore as a greenfield special steel facility. As Joint Managing Director at Shah Alloys Limited, he was accountable for overall plant performance. Most recently, as Chief Technical Advisor to the BRG Group, he led the decade-long engineering and commissioning of an integrated special & stainless steel plant at Angul, Odisha — where his team designed and fabricated the slab caster in-house, delivering it at close to one-tenth the imported cost.

He holds his degree from BIT Sindri. His practice is built on a simple conviction: a steel plant is not bought — it is built. The clients who seek out Jha & Associates are the ones who understand the difference.

The Method

Advise. Engineer. Fabricate. Commission.

Most advisory practices stop at the recommendation. Ours doesn't. We carry engagements through to commissioned equipment — and because we design and fabricate the critical components ourselves, our clients typically save a large fraction of the capex of an imported OEM build.

01

Frame

We begin by restating the promoter's question in their own language, then testing it against the metallurgical, commercial, and regulatory reality. Most engagements are re-scoped at this stage.

02

Engineer

We prepare plant layouts, equipment specifications, and process flowsheets grounded in four decades of practice — not in a vendor's catalogue. We walk the site, read the drawings, and speak to the operators.

03

Fabricate

Where the economics demand it, we design and fabricate critical equipment in-house — slab casters, induction furnaces, AOD converters, tundishes, and CCM components — at a fraction of OEM cost.

04

Commission

We remain engaged through commissioning, first-heat campaigns, and the ramp-up to stable yield. Counsel is cheap; commissioned, working metal is the product.

Engagement Notes

Two engagements. One conviction.

Representative illustrations of the practice — one a ten-year stewardship, the other an eight-month sprint. Both built, not bought. Client-specific figures abstracted for confidentiality.

01

Integrated Special & Stainless Steel — Angul, Odisha

As Chief Technical Advisor to BRG Group, led the decade-long technical program of a greenfield integrated plant producing special and stainless steel grades — spanning steelmaking, secondary metallurgy, continuous casting, rolling, and finishing.

The defining achievement of the engagement was the in-house design and fabrication of the plant's slab caster, built with local fabrication partners to specifications developed from first principles — delivered at close to one-tenth the cost of an imported OEM caster, with performance matching the reference benchmarks.

What the engagement produced

A commissioned, operational facility — with a stabilized product mix, a trained technical cadre, and a capital structure that survived two downturns in the domestic steel cycle because the critical equipment had not been bought, it had been built.

More importantly, a decision architecture the promoter could continue to use after the advisor stepped away: standard equipment specifications, a local fabrication network, a heat-level quality protocol, and a board-ready monthly technical dashboard.

02

Soni Ispat — A plant in eight months.

A greenfield specialty steel plant engineered, fabricated, and commissioned in just eight months — a timeline that would be considered aggressive even with imported OEM equipment, and was accomplished here while simultaneously fabricating the critical plant in-house.

The slab caster, induction furnace, and ladle refining furnace (LRF) were designed and built in parallel, then brought online together on a single commissioning day — an orchestration that required every discipline, vendor, and fabrication shop to converge to the same hour.

Why this engagement is definitive

Industry convention says you choose two of three: speed, cost, or in-house fabrication. Soni Ispat delivered all three — a special steel plant built for a fraction of the OEM-led capex, on a timeline OEM-led projects rarely match, with the critical equipment designed and fabricated under direct technical control.

The engagement remains the clearest proof of the practice's operating thesis: with the right engineering discipline and a local fabrication network, a promoter does not need to wait eighteen months and pay imported-OEM prices to commission a working plant.

Frequently asked questions.

Who is this practice for?

Promoters, CEOs, CFOs, plant heads, lenders, and institutional investors engaged with special steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, or mini mill operations — particularly those considering a greenfield build, an acquisition, a modernization program, or a turnaround.

Do you work with projects outside India?

Yes. While the practice is based in Mumbai with a deep Indian operating base, we accept engagements across South Asia, the Gulf, East Africa, and Southeast Asia where the metallurgical and commercial context is familiar.

Will Bhupendra Jha personally handle the engagement?

Yes. Every engagement — discovery call through retainer — is led personally by Bhupendra. We do not staff associates on your mandate. On larger greenfield programs, specialist sub-advisors are introduced transparently and with your written consent.

What does a typical advisory engagement cost?

Discovery consultations are billed at ₹30,000 per hour, paid in advance. On-site advisory engagements — Bhupendra Jha with two senior team members — are billed at ₹70,000 per day, with travel, accommodation, and incidentals reimbursed at actuals. Retainer mandates, greenfield programs, and full turnaround engagements are bespoke and scoped individually; commercial structures range from fixed monthly fees to hybrid fee-plus-success-linked arrangements. All fees are exclusive of GST as applicable.

How do you handle confidentiality?

Every engagement is governed by a mutual NDA executed before any confidential information is exchanged. Public references are never used without written approval. Our default posture is that the existence of an engagement is itself confidential.

Can I cancel or reschedule?

Discovery calls can be rescheduled at no cost up to 24 hours before the session, and are fully refundable up to 48 hours before. Advisory engagements and retainers follow the terms stated in the signed engagement letter.

Do you take equity or success fees?

Selectively. For greenfield programs where the promoter seeks deeper alignment, we will consider a blended structure — a reduced monthly fee with a modest success-linked component tied to commissioning and ramp-up milestones. This is never mandatory and is always promoter-initiated.
